My beard is growing.

My beard is coming in strong! I hope that soon the locals give me a nick name. Robbie and Hayden have one, they have been growing theirs since they got here. They are usually called Jesus or Barnabas, hopefully i get something along the lines of Zeus or Mountain man.

swimming with Edgar

Well the swimming classes are coming along. There are some days where it is hard to get the kids to focus, that is usually the 9 o'clock class. So we practice stroke for a while and then at the end play freeze tag or shark. It is pretty fun, to swim with the kids and hang out.

There are some new people here for about 2 weeks. Two fourth year medical students from Loma Linda and a Nurse. We have upped the clinic hours to 8 am , 2 pm, and 7 pm. It has been nice to have some new people around and have more clinic hours. I have been pulling some teeth this week. Thankfully they have all been pretty simple. No complications. We had a kid come in that was terrified of us. I felt his pain, when it comes to being scared of shots. He screamed and kicked we had to hold him down. I felt really bad holding his head, poor little guy.

They gave me a shot last weekend. I had some intense Diarrhea and fever. So the Doctor decided to give me a shot. For those of you that know me, you know that i have a very big fear of needles. For some reason the people of Peru don't believe in arm shots. It was a massive needle that went into my butt. It took Wendy and Taylor a lot of convincing and talking before i finally laid down and let them give it to me. I might or might have not freaked out a little. it was horrible.

Digging the hole

I worked with Ever again, we dug a hole for a new septic tank. When i say we i actually mean EVER, i kinda just threw dirt around for a couple hours. I was talking to Russell and we decided that we probably slowed him down. I have no idea how he digs so perfectly and quickly, i am not very good at this whole digging into pure clay business.

Thats all i got right now. It has been harder to write about stuff. My dad says i should write my reflections. so i will work on that for next time. Sorry this is so short and kinda lame next one will be better. I will end with a sun set picture...cause thats my thing.

Photo Edition

This past week the doctor was in Lima for some sort of business or something, so we had a little down time. There wasn't a ton of stuff that happened. I started teaching a swim class with Taylor and Stephanie. During February they have Carnival, it is not like the brazilian carnival. Basically just a water fight, and give you a pass to wet random strangers on the road. We had some kids over and "played" carnival as they called it. It was fun, that turned into a throw people into the mud. I decided no water fight ever ends well, it always goes a little too long.

On friday it was raining, when it rains no one come to the clinic and everything gets really muddy and slippery. Robbie, Taylor, Russell, and I decided to go fishing, instead of sleeping in. Our plan was to just go to Yarina, which is like a lake with lots of little tourist boats, and see if we could rent a canoe or something. We met Miguel, a tourist boat guy who offered to let us take his 20 ft boat to fish. We soon realized the boat was a little to big to maneuver with just tiny paddles. So he ended up coming with us, he lent us fishing rodes and bought bait for us. All together we paid like 4.50 for 2 1/3 hours of fishing, it was a lot of fun.

Here are just pictures of carnival, fishing, sun sets, lighting, and random stuff....

A breeze...

I started sleeping in my hammock this past week, because it has been so hot at night. It has been AMAZING! I actually get cold most nights, so I'll probably end up sleeping there until i get tired of it. It is so hot and humid here. I love it when there is a breeze, even a small breeze. It is one of the most refreshing things of my day. Another favorite activity is showering, the water is one temperature...cold. I hated cold showers until i started living in this heat with no air conditioning. One last thing that i am thankful for is the water tower that is on the clinic property. The view up there is awesome of the surrounding areas and the sunsets, for those of you that know me i love sunsets! I had planned on putting up pictures of sunsets and lightning storms I got with my gopro from the water tower. But i forgot my external that has the pictures back at the clinic, so next time.

It blows my mind how cheap food is here. Well i guess when you compare it to food back in the states. Last night we all went out to eat, and 7 of us ate comfortably for around 6 american dollars. I wish my neighborhood had ladies cooking food on the street. Looking ahead I think that will be one of the hard things going back to, paying more than 3 bucks a meal.

Doing chores around the clinic with Ever makes me realize that he is on another level of working hard. It makes me feel like I'm in high school again working for Mr. Jacobson. Mr. J would ask me to do something, and 45 min later come back take over what i was doing and finish in 5 minutes. Things like this happen when i try to help Ever around the clinic. I was pretty proud of my small square of grass i had cut by hand using a machete. Then i turned around and saw Ever's larger square, cut shorter and way nicer, not to mention a lot faster.  It just makes me laugh, that he will amuse me, be letting me help him.

We went to the Zoo this saturday. It was an interesting experience to say the least. They were under som serious construction, so there weren't a ton of animals. They had railings, but they were more of a suggestion than anything. We would just hop the railing and walk among the cages. If we wanted to we could have stuck our hands into the Leopard cages, we were touching all the monkeys. The Zoo was not as worried about safety as the ones i had been too in the past. Peru is very lenient on the rules.

Quick clinic story, I was doing consult stuff with the doctor on Wednesday i think. A patient came in with hemorrhoids, and the doctor needed to examine.  There was one problem with that, the doctor is very allergic to latex, so if he runs out of his special gloves he has no gloves to use. He looks at me and kinda just starts laughing, telling me to go get some gloves. It was very disturbing, and humors at the same time, I am very thankful though that he didn't make me do the examination to its full extent.
